vpn routing question

Does anyone know what is the best way to configure the internet router /
firewall to allow internal private users to connect to an external vpn
session?
Our cheap Intel router allows dynamic NAT which permits a range definition
of external IP's to map to internal static IP's....
but isnt there another way to allow the VPN session request to come back to
the router and know which client requested the connection initially without
using dynamic NAT?
