VPN login problems ?

Not sure if this is an issue with W2K at my end or XP SP2 at the other end.

I have my VPN set up (home/office to office with a LAN-LAN configuration on
the router) seems to be working, I can get to the office W98 PC okay from
home using my W2K PC but trying to map to the XP SP2 PC in the office is
proving to be a problem, I am assuming it is some sort of security issue
but I am unsure what to enable on the WinXP system to allow access ?

I get the following error at my home office W2K machine when trying to map
to a shared drive on the Xp2p2 machine, "Logon failure: The user has not
been granted the requested logon type at this computer". I am trying to log
as myself, I am in the Administrators group on both PCs and have access to
the shared folders at the XP PC itself. I have tried another users logon,
same result... nada.

Google gave me some places to check but no luck... yet

Yes, I can ping the PC in question. Yes, the "computer browser" service is
set to start automatically and is running, I have shut the firewall down (I
have heard SP 2 disabled the browser with a timeout error or something and
this might be the prolme ie it's an SP2 issue ?)

I am at a bit of a loss and am a noob at this, any help looked upon kindly
:)

That normally indicates a user right problem. Open Local Security Policy on
the XP computer via secpol.msc in the run box and go to security
settings/local policies/user rights and find the user right for access this
computer from the network. Make sure everyone is listed and if not add
everyone. Also check deny access to this computer from the network for any
users/groups as the "deny" setting will override the "allow" user right.
Also you must be using a password to access a Windows XP computer over the
network. --- Steve

The PC is using XP SP2 Home, it advises me I can't use this console plugin
with the home edition.

I am. I am an Admin user on the remote XP PC and an Admin user on the W2K
machine I am trying to gain access with.

Thank you, this posting has solved my problem with file sharing and vpn
connection.
Now I cannot make a remote desktop on the vpn connection. The computer
that had the problem doesn't accept it. I get the message: Remote
connections may not be enabled or the computer may be too busy...

Thank you, I found it:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/mobility/getstarted/enableremote.mspx
-> enableremote.mpsx.htm
From ControlPanel -> System -> Remote tab: Allow users to connect
remotely to this computer.

After I got the Remote Desktop to connect, when I tried to login I got
the message that local policies does not allow me to connect
interactively. So I went to security
settings/local policies/user rights as before and added my username to
Allow logon through terminal services.

Thanks again for pointing this area.

OK. I am not familiar with XP Home. I suggest that you post in an XP
security or XP networking newsgroup to see if they have any advice. Be sure
to specify the computer you are trying to access is XP Home. --- Steve

Doesn't appear to be a specific WinXP group like this (from my newserver
anyway) but I will try something more XP generic. I was a little unsure if
it was a W2K problem at this end of an XP problem at the other end
to see if they have any advice. Be
sure to specify the computer you are trying to access is XP Home.

Will do and thanks anyway.

There is a Microsoft.public.windowsxp.security_admin and a
Microsoft.public.windowsxp.network_web if you can find those. I used XP Home
a couple of times and I know there is some goofy wizard setup for networking
that maybe needs to be configured correctly. I found the link below that may
help. --- Steve

I don't think VPN will work with XP Home?

Well you can set up a VPN client.... sure, it can't run a VPN server but
that is not what I am doing.... The routers are doing the VPN work, to the
PC it should just look like a private IP...

Hell, even W98 is coping fine, along with W2K, it's just logging into the
XP boxes that is the problem, they can get out across the VPN to other
rsources, I just can't log into them !?!
