vpn grayed out

XP Pro. I had a vpn connection set up.

Attempted to install SP2. Had to abort. Lost the use of the computer for a
day while I repaired WinXP and several other programs (not sure I want to
try the serv pack again but that's another story)

Everything seems stable now, but I've lost the VPN thing totally. The
connection doesn't even pop up or open when I click.

When I try to create a new connection, it opens the wizard, I tell it I want
to connect to my workplace and the next screen is supposed to give me the
option of Dial-up or VPN. Both are grayed out.

I figure there is some windows component that has somehow become
unavailable. So I popped in the CD and selected every single thing the
system offered. Still no option for Dial-up or VPN.

It's something very very simple, isn't it?
Will someone tell me what it is?

Thanks!

okay. this seems kind of bad.

The suggestion was to go to the command line and run computer management.
Then go to Services and Applications|services|Remote Access Connection
Manager and then enable it if it were disabled.
Mine said it was set to start manually. I selected "automatically" and then
hit "start service". I get the following message:

"Could not start the Remote Access Connection Manager Service in Local
Computer. Error 5: Access is denied."

A second google group posting suggested rerunning service pack 1 for XP if
you get an error code 5. Looking around the microsoft site, I'm not seeing
service pack 1 available anymore. Does this mean service pack 2 might fix
it? That's where all my problems started in the first place....

SP2 includes SP1, so yes reinstalling SP2 may solve the issue...

Additionally, if you want to run SP1, it can be found on microsoft's
site as SP1A now. The original service pack (1) can no longer be
downloaded. SP1A has some improvements over the original.

Did you try restore mode to the day before you attempted to put SP2 in?
Might be a shortcut to fixing it.
