VPN failing on game start

I setup a VPN with a friend. After connection, the computers see each
other (ping goes OK).

If I start a game and start hosting a multiplayer game (waiting for my
friend to connect), his ping to my computer stops working. Mine to his
is OK. The problem is solved after we disconnect and reconnect.

The problem is the same if he starts a game and I try to connect to his
computer etc.

We tried various games (Warcraft 3, Rogue Spear etc). Same result.

Suggestions ?
 
The Internet connection between the people in my town works fine, but
the connection to the international gaming servers just sucks.

Building a VPN between his computer and mine makes both computers to
behave like being in the same LAN, and the games should work just fine.
