VPN Dialer and firewalls

QUESTION: My operating system is Win XP Pro, and I using
Norton. In order to use the VPN dialer, I must first
disable the Norton Firewall. This does not seem to be a
very safe method because I am using a cable modem and
thus always have an open line. What steps can I take to
ensure that I do not have security breaches during the
few seconds beginning when I disable the firewall and
when I complete sign-on to CITRIX via the VPN dialer?

More important, sometimes our mainframe computers go down
and inadvertently bounce everyone off CITRIX. Not
knowing when these outages occur, I could be working at
my PC and not knowing the computer's vulnerability.

Find out what ports your VPN program requires and open them?

Will these open ports be a security vulnerability when I
am not using the VPN? Or, do I close these ports after I
am logged off the VPN? If Norton's firewall is enabled
and the ports are open, will my computer be protected
whether or not I am using the VPN?
