VPN Connection slow

I have two computers with Windows XP Pro at different locations. I can
connect to the computer using a VPN connection, but it is very slow. For
example, I have a folder that contains files with a combine size of 180 mega
bytes. If I wanted to transfer those files to my local pc it would take
about 90 minutes. That is to damm slow for me. Both places have cable
modems. Both have Max upload stream of 256kb and download stream of 3MB.
Both places also have same service provider too. Both are Adelphia powerlink
cable modem. Is there any way to make it faster. Any tweaks that can make
it faster. I don't need it to be secured. I don't need any encryptions,
because the data is not that important to be that heavily secured. So if
anyone can help me out that would be great.

Actually, 90 minutes sounds fast for 180 MB on a 256K link... :)

The only way to make it faster is to make the file smaller (i.e.,
increasing the compaction level in WinZIP, WinRAR, etc).
