VPN connection and SBS

Good morning smart people :

I have a client attached to my SBS server via a VPN, everything for the VPN functions well except Outlook. It will not find the server, it will check a name (but it's slow at it) and return that the name is verified.

I really don't know where to go with this, I have tried several different ways of setting it up and have obviously missed something key here.

Does anyone know what I may be doing (or not doing) to cause this? I have heard that I may have to change the MTU size in the registry.... I am loath to do this and would love it if one of you had the solution

Many Thanks in advance

Sorry, additional info

I have Exchange server 2000
The machine was already configured to connect to the server locally through a LAN

If that helps :)

Add the internal IP-address and name of the Exchange server to the client's
host-file
