VPN Connect Problem

G

George Beckwith

I have a Win XP Pro machine setup as a VPN server, behind
a Linksys BEFSX41 router. The router is setup for PPTP
passthrough and port forwarding (1723 and 47) to the VPN
server. When I try to connect from a remote Win 98 or ME
machine I receive Dial-up Networking Error 650. The Win 98
machine does show Verifying User Name and Password before
giving the 650 message. The Win XP VPN server gives Event
ID:20049 (The user connected to port VPN7-1 has been
disconnected because the authentication process did not
complete withing the required amonut of time). The default
gateway on the Win XP machine is pointing to the Linksys
router. Have the latest firmware in the Linksys.

Any ideas about how to resolve this problem would be
greatly appreciated.

Hi George,

When you say "port forwarding (1723 and 47)" did you set it up to forward
TCP port 47 or IP Protocol 47? GRE is IP Protocol 47 and it doesn't use a
TCP port. If it is open you will not be able to sucessfully connect to the
VPN server. You can test by trying to connect a VPN client session to the
VPN server from the console of the VPN server itself.

Thank you Marc.

The Linksys web site says for PPTP passthrough to forward
to the VPN server both TCP and UDP ports 1723 and 47. In
the router it looks like this:
Ext Port TCP UDP IP Address
1723 Yes Yes 192.168.1.101
47 Yes Yes 192.168.1.101

I am not clear on your statement "If it is open you will
not be able to sucessfully connect to the VPN server."-
could you elaborate.

I will try connecting a VPN client session from the same
XP Pro computer that runs the VPN server. Linsksys also
suggested removing the router (for test purposes) and
going directly from my DSL modem to the VPN server
computer which I will also try.

Again, many thanks for your help.
