VPN con nection using Linksys router as gateway

Hi All,
I am trying to reach Host computer from my lap top.
Following is the connection details of my set up.
Cable Modam connected to Linksys router.
Router is configured as gatway.
then host is connected to router(hardwire) also when i am home.
this lap top is connected to router via wireless

on my client "laptop" i am making new vpn connection but still unable to
communicate thru internet
can any one help?????

Both computers are using Window XP Home

Which VPN client are you using? Are you connecting to the public ip address
of your router? Is your router configured to allow VPN to pass through your
router. Is the host configured with a static private ip address? Is the host
setup and configured to allow vpn connections with the proper setting to
allow your user account to access.
