VPN behind router

I've been able to successfully connect winxp and sbs2003
using a vpn connection over a phone line to a highspeed
connection. The only way this works is if the highspeed
side where the vpn server resides is connected directly
to the cable modem without the firewall. As soon as the
firewall is in place I get a 721 error, tries to verify
username and password but then indicates the server isn't
responding. I've opened up ports 1723, 1701, 500 and and
enabled protocol 47 (gre). I've even placed the vpn
server in the dmz with the same results. I've tried
americom, dlink and linksys routers with the same
results. I've also made registry changes for ipenable.
I think I'm about out of ideas, if anybody has a few more
I would greatly appreciate them.
