vpn authentication

My VPN users are having to click the redial button several times before they
can establish a connection. On the vpn server I have been receiving the
following error messages in the system log:

Event ID: 20073
The following error occurred in the Point to Point Protocol module on port:
VPN4-7, UserName: jwilliam. The authentication server did not respond to
authentication requests in a timely fashion.

My users are connecting but it takes several redials for the connection to
occur.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Are you doing Radius Authentication? If so, then you might want to check
what's going on your Radius server

No, I just have routing and remote access setup and users authenticate on one
of the domain controllers as if they were in the office. i think what's
happening is users are authenticating on a dc that is located in a different
segment of my network in a different building. I would like to make the vpn
users authenticate on the main dc in my office.
