VPN and LAN connection

I currently am connected to the internet via a LAN. /When
I lof on to my workplace VPN, I can no longer use explore
or send/receive any email. Any suggestions?
 
this is 'by design'.
When you connect through a VPN, your requests are routed to the default
gateway on the remote side of your VPN connection (and thus no longer to the
default gateway of your ISP connection)
 
Is there any way to fix this?

Well, AFAIK it's either one or the other, so disconnecting your VPN if you
want internet.
