volume icon disappears from system tray

The system tray volume control icon intermitently does not
appear when windows XP boots and then again sometimes it
is there. Properly configured in control panel sounds and
audio. Taskbar setting is "always on" but in addition the
hide taskbar icons is not checked. Have not been able to
identify setting(s) in registry.
