Volume controls reset with each re-boot

For the life of me I can't seem to find a way to prevent XP from resetting
the volume control settings with each re-boot.

The Wave, SW Synth and CD Player all revert to highest volume each time the
system is re-booted. I've changed them once the system is up and running, but
they go back to 'some setting' that can only be described as anything but
normal 'default'.

Is there an application (like WMP, WinAmp or Skype for instance) that resets
the controls to a previous setting or is this just norml for XP?

Please advise.

For the record, I'm running XP Home Edition on a Gateway box.

I used to have this very same problem on an old XP home Dell machine. While I
never did pin down the exact cause, going to Dell's (or the sound card's
manufacturer's) website, downloading and then installing the latest sound
driver did the trick for me.

Not normal. Check volume settings of every installed audio player.
Some may interact.
