volume control

If I am in the wrong place, please let me know where I
should ask this question.
I no longer have sound on my computer. I noticed I did
not have the volume control in the task panel any longer.
Went to control panel to check the volume settings and
add to task bar. Pop up box said "volume control could
not be added to task bar because the volume control
program was not installed. Go to add/remove programs to
install." I do not know enough to know what the sound
program is. I didn't see anything listed that looked
like a volume control program. I need your help.
