Volume control not responding correctly

Hello,

I have looked for an answer to this problem but have not yet found similar
symptoms.

I have recently installed iTunes, and am using a new USB driven headphone
device. Audio playback has worked following these changes for sometime with
no problems whatsoever.

However, this morning suddenly the Speaker section of the Volume Control
panel for the USB device does not work properly. When I try to 'push' the
volume control up, after I 'unclick' the mouse the volume setting slowly
'falls' down to zero. While it remains above zero, the playback can be heard
fine. And I can keep it playing by continuing to 'push' the volume control
back up, but ultimately it always returns to zero.

The controls work fine however for the Sigma Tel C-Major Audio (e.g. my
sound card).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

No help, alas, but I have experienced something similar.

That was when using a resource-hungry software synthesizer. Its
master-volume would sometimes be "magnetic" to the zero-level when I used
its MIDI player.

I can't reproduce or test that no more, nor can I say if it could be a
matter of CPU load or power (say powering USB-devices).

So JH, I'll join you in awaiting other answers. :)
