Volume adjustment

(I hope this doesn't sound like a silly question. )

I am unsure if there is a problem with my speakers themselves or a setting
within Windows XP. The speakers model is Creative. The volume doesn't
appear to be working as I expected. By this I mean, I have to have to
volume on the higest level on the speakers and on the highest level on
Windows as well. This is still not 'loud' - more just average level
compared to a radio or tv. I am not sure if something has changed within XP
to set the level of the volume permanently as I am sure, in the past, I
could have the volume alot louder.

If you can assist / advise me, I would be grateful.

Thank you.

April, try going to Control Panel>Sound and Audio Devices>Device
Volume-Advanced. There you can raise the sliders up and increase the volume.

Forgive me if I'm saying something obvious, but if these are powered
speakers, make sure they are plugged in and that the outlet is live.

Make sure you use the correct outlet on the sound card when you connect
the external speakers. If this is a modern Creative card, there will be
several outlet jacks.

If you have Creative speakers, you probably have a Creative sound card
and can adjust separately the volumes for wave, MIDI, CD audio, line-in,
and more. Right click on the speaker icon in the systray and select Open
Volume Control. This is different from what you get with a left click on
the icon which give just the master volume control.

Thank you for the suggestions. As suggested, I have checked my Control
Panel and the volume is on the highest. I have also double check if my
outlet is working and that is fine to.

I do know how to check the sound card. Can you please let me know how to
check the Sound Card in more detail (as you mentioned, this is different
from the Master Sound Control)? I am not sure if it is a Creative Sound
Card.. I bought the speakers separately from the laptop.

Thank you. :)

What entries show in Device Manager under Sound, Video, and Game
Controllers?

Under Games Controller, there is nothing.

Under Sounds & Audio Devices Properties, the entries are DVD-RAM, Sound MAX
Integrated Digital Audio, Bluetooth Audio, Audio Codes, Legacy Audio
drivers, Media Control devices, Legacy Video Capture devices, Video Codecs.

Have you checked to make sure your cables are seated properly? Try
unplugging and then replugging them (the cables from the speakers to the
sound card).

Just found a volume button on the side of the laptop itself which was 'low'
and now I have increased the volume there.

Thanks alot, that's perfect.
Kind regards.
