A friend of mine uses a Win98 PC and I'd like to know whether there is
any free VoIP app that also runs under Win 98 ?

Thanks
Frank

Attention!
Having SJphone installed is not enough to talk. You have to purchase an
account with any ITSP like Vonage or start your own service. The direct
host2host calls work, but you need to know your party's IP-address.

So, I guess this is somewhat tricky.
thanks for the hint, never of heard before

Its simple, no need to worry. You could use it with voipuser,
http://www.voipuser.org/ for free.

Another question: any app for conference calling with win98 ?

Frank

I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for, but
"PicoPhone allows multiple concurrent calls..."

From the SJphone help: If you want to talk to several respondents
simultaneously, you need to start a conference. That can be done by
clicking the Conference button on the SJphone Main panel. Now you may
talk to several respondents simultaneously. They also will hear you
and each other.

Provided that the computer and connection are fast enough for VoIP,
then Skype will work. I have run v1.0.0.106 under win98se since forever.
Skype<->Skype calls (including conference calls) are free, but all other
Skype services are prepay and some of those, such as voice mail, are not
supported by early versions of the software. The Skype software works
from the get-go from behind a hardware NAT router with no port
forwarding or other hoo-hah. Unfortunately, the Skype software is not
easily transportable; early versions store user data locally but later
versions store some user data such as contact lists on a remote server
so that users may access their accounts from any computer running Skype
software.
Adcalls is another "free" computer->phone VoIP service that I use
personally but, as the name implies, it is OT in this forum.

What's wrong with Skype? It does work with win98 -- if you get the
correct version.

See: http://www.oldversion.com/

I am using v1.4.0.84

And the different versions collaborate well? We intend to have
conference calls between PCs with XP, a PC with Win98 and a Mac. Any idea ?

The Skype FAQ says:
Can I use Skype with Windows 98 or Windows ME?

Because it hasn't been fully tested, we have not yet certified Skype for use with these operating systems. Skype may work with Windows 98 (Win98)or ME but we cannot yet guarantee compatibility. Some WinME/9x video (and possibly others) drivers tend to use 100% of processor for their needs for relatively long periods of time. This can cause the audio quality to degrade significantly. In addition, WinME/9x does not offer full unicode support, which means that some things may not display properly.

Did you have any of the difficulties mentioned?

Can't see why not. Conferencing is a function of the network service.
(The PC is just the client software.)

It's free to download and install. Why not try it out? Install one to
win98, another to an XP machine, another to a MAC (humm, des it work on
MAC?) Then try it out. Post back here if you do.

I just found another freeware one, announced by the French gratilog
freeware site:
VoIPerized

It runs under Windows and Linux but I didn't find which Windows versions.

From the website:

What is VoIPerized?

VoIPerized is a so called VoIP program. VoIPerized enables you to make
free audio calls to other people who also run VoIPerized. When making
VoIPerized the focus was to minimize the latency, because other VoIP
programs always seemed to have an irritating lag which makes the
conversation seem unnatural. By using the open source Speex audio codec,
the audio quality is far higher than any normal telephone call.

VoIPerized Features
* Extremely low latency (0.120 seconds + ping time)
* Conference with unlimited people at the same time
* Contact list supports unlimited number of contacts
* Adjust the bitrate to your needs
* High audio quality (16 kHz sampling)
* Low CPU usage
* Adaptive Jitter Buffering
* Smart packetloss concealment
* VAD (Voice Audio Detection) or PTT (Push to Talk)
* Easy to use interface
* Missed phonecalls are logged
* Option to Auto-accept or Auto-decline calls
* Displays your own IP-address (even when behind a router)
* UPnP support. VoIPerized automatically does the needed port
forwarding (Windows XP & UPnP router required)
