VM Pagefile Issue

Guest

I am helping someone fix their machine that is getting a message about the
pagefile being too full. The machine is running XP Professional, so I went
into the performance options tab in the My Computer Advanced Properties tab.
I had her set the pagefile to 2048 MB min and 3096MB Max. However in the
bottom of that window there is information about the page file such as:
Minum Allowed: 2MB
Recommended: 1150 MB
Currently Allocated: 0MB
I have never seen the currently Allocated at 0MB before. The settings are
2048 and 3096 for the Minimum and the Maximum PF, and I've even rebooted
after setting them that high, and she's still getting the same error. What
could be causing this and how can I fix it?

Right click "My Computer", select properties from the drop down list.
On the System Properties click on Advanced Tab then on Performance Button.
On Performance Options Windows locate the Virtual Memory Header and click on
Change Button.
On Virtual Memory window make sure the Primary Partition is
Highlighted/Selected under Drive [ Volume Label] as folllow:

Drive [ Volume Label] Paging File Size (MB)

C: <- make sure this Highlighted
D:
E:
F:
etc....

Paging file size for selected drive:

Drive: C:
Space available: 7313MB or whatever size on your machine.

(*) Custom size: <- select this Radio Button
Initial size (MB): [ 460 ]
Maximum size (MB):[720 ]

( ) System Managed size
( ) No Paging file

You may have the above Radio button selected ( No Paging file), please
uncheck if it is.

The Custom radio button was selected. I did check all that. Usually when I
get this error message I do just expand the pagefile and everything's okay.
But no matter what I set the custom size to, 0MB is what it says is
allocated. Still Stumped, but thanks for the tip.

How large is the partition where the pagefile is located and how much
free disk space?

Hope this helps.

Does your friend have enough disk space on the hard disk?.
You can change the location for the page file if the primary partition run
out of space.

How many partitions created on this machine?.
What happen if you let the system manage the paging file?.

based on the numbers
you provided set

initial size to 2

and set the

max size to 1150

then reboot.

There is only one partition on that drive, When I set these up I usually
spread the PF over as many partitions as I can. There is 27GB free on the
drive (of 40GB). The whole thing doesn't make sense to me, it's a pretty easy
repair......usually. But for some reason no matter what option you choose, no
matter what custom size you make the PF, it still allocates 0Mb to the
pagefile.

Please detail the size of each partition, the free space on each and the
pagefile size on each.

When you have changed a pagefile do you click Set then OK and restart
the computer to allow the change to take affect?

This size available on the disk is 27 GB. It is a 40 GB Hard disk. The
settings of the PF are 2048 Mb and 3096 Mb. It lets me make the change just
fine, and then prompts me to reboot. After reboot, the allocated space for PF
is still OMb and you get a message that says "windows has created a temporary
virtual memory pagefile." And that's it. Everytime you change it, it's the
same song and dance.

there should
be a file called
pagefile.sys on
your disk.

this is the space
reserved for the
virtual memory and
its size is allocated
based on the settings
in the virtual memory
control panel.

you may need
to set your system
to show/reveal system
files, as it may be
hidden.

look for the file and
notate the file size.

also, it might be better
to work on the virtual
memory problem in
safemode until it is
resolved.

Thanks for the tip. As of right now, I haven't actually seen the machine.
Just a few screen-shots via email, and descriptions over the phone.

Il keep you guys posted!

How much RAM memory?

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

Open Disk Defragmenter and click on Analyse. Select View Report and
click on Save As and Save. Now find VolumeC.txt in your My Documents
Folder and post a copy.
