Vlookup slows system

Can anyone explain why using vlookup would seem to be so resource heavy?

Take a look here and see if there is anything you can apply to your
situation. The performance is dependent on the number and type of VLOOKUP e.g
exact matches take longer than approximate matches..

Thanks for your answer. It makes sense if Excel has to perform more complex
evaluations, such as exact match, that it would slow the system down.
