VLOOKUP - Can't see result

I have an Excel 2003 spreadsheet with a vlookup formula in it. I created it
using the formula bar and I can see the result in there, but I can only see
the formula on the spreadsheet. I have tried to toggle the formula view
(ctrl+`) and tested other functions (=2+2) to make sure they work...they do.

Any suggestions?

Format the cell as General (or anything but Text)
then select that cell, hit F2, then enter to make excel think you reentered the
formula.
