John

I tried searching through the USENET access at Google however I can't
seem to find a group supporting Visual Web Developer. Any suggestions
?

If you mean .NET or Visual Studio, the groups are called
microsoft.public.donet .. and microsoft.public.visualstudio ...

Thanks Ron. I've added all of the expression groups to my Agent
newsreader. Are the MVP's from m.po.f.c. going to migrate to
Expression ?

Also, just to confirm, Microsoft® Expression® Web is the same as
Microsoft® Visualt Web Developer 2005 Express Edition® ?

So much to learn, so little time !

Some MVPs many move over but there will be people here to help FrontPage
users.

And no, the two products are different. EWD is the replacement (or next
generation) for FrontPage and VWD Express is the cutdown version of the full
Visual Studio product. Both are for designing web sites but the Visual
Studio family is more aimed at .NET developers (although EWD will support
..NET). You may want to try out both and see which one fits your needs. EWD
is still in beta but you can get a copy to try. See
http://www.microsoft.com/products/expression/en/web_designer/wd_free_trial.aspx

NOTE: Since this is a Beta product you should be careful using it on a
production site. You can get support or answers to question about it in the
newsgroup Ron mentioned.

Hmmm, I'm installing

Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2005

http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/vwd/

Bad move ?

John,

If you want to design an ASP.NET-enabled Web site, your best option is
to use both Expression Web and Visual Web Developer. If you aren't
interested in ASP.NET, Expression Web is the right choice.

Not at all. This falls into the Visual Studio family of products. It's not
Expression Web Design (that's a different product -
http://www.microsoft.com/products/expression/en/default.mspx)

What you're getting is the cut down version of Visual Studio for people that
want to do visual development but can't afford the high price of the full
version.

Dave

Thanks again Dave. It appears to be something like MS Works vs. MS
Office. At least that's my interpretation. Unfortunately after reading
about 20 different site I now have even more questions about choosing
..ASP, .NET or PHP. My host is (still) Godaddy.com and they offer both
Windows and Linux based servers with MySQL being their database
platform of choice. Would you care to provide a quick opinion on
making a choice for someone who is just getting into database web
development ?

The choice is really a preference. I use ASP and .NET. It depends on what
you're more comfortable with and what your ISP supports. I use
www.webhost4life.com as a hosting company and they have all the features I
need at a great price. If you're just getting into this .NET is the newer
programming language so you might want to go with that. If you learn it
you'll find more job opportunities if you're looking for them.

Thanks Jim! I hadn't seen that site.

By the way, there is an MSDN forum for VWD support:

Not really. Don't make the mistake of thinking that you must use one
or the other. If you are building a chair, for example, you wouldn't
choose between a saw and a hammer. You would use both!

If you are developing a Web site that doesn't use any ASP.NET
features, Expression Web is a great choice. However, if you want to go
beyond rudimentary ASP.NET, you'll want to use Expression Web AND
Visual Web Developer. It is my strong opinion that using both is the
best choice.

Keep an eye out for my book on this very topic. It will release
somewhere around the middle of next year.

This brings up a question in my mind...

Is it "standard practice" or better, or don't matter which app you would
start the website in?

I know that EW does not use a lot of the files that VS2005 makes, but I
assume they would all be needed on the finaly website/web app?

And middle of next year is too late!

~~~ still trying to figure out the relationship between EW and all the other
programs :(
I've got an appendix in my Expression Web book that goes over a lot of
the details of using VWD and why.
You can create your site in either VWD or EW. It really doesn't
matter. The model in ASP.NET 2.0 doesn't include the extraneous files
that are used in the 1.1 model and Visual Studio .NET 2003.
