You can't bring back Windows XP unless you
wish to purchase a full version of Windows XP
and perform a clean install. Perhaps you can
enlighten us by what we mean by "absolutely awful".

Try the following performance tips:

Open Power Options (its in the Control Panel) and then
place a dot next to High Performance.

Next:

Open Device Manager (its in the Control Panel) and then
right-click on your hard drive (under Disk Drives). Click
on "Policies" and make sure there are check marks next to
"Optimize for Performance", "Enable write caching on
the disk", and "Enable advanced performance", then click OK.

Next, perform a Disk Cleanup:

Click on the blue Vista start button and then on the Computer
entry in the Start Menu. Right-click on your hard drive and
select Properties > Disk Cleanup > Files from all users.....
More Options > Clean Up (System Restore and Shadow Copies).

Consider installing addition RAM up to 2GB. Having a total of
2GB RAM installed will significantly improve overall performance.
Visit: http://www.crucial.com/ and run the Crucial System Scanner Tool.

That will not work since it requires a conventional
Windows Vista DVD which the OP will not have
with a preinstalled Windows Vista operating system.

Why not XP behind Vista? See:

That may not be true.
I got what appears to be a perfectly good vista DVD with my Samsung
notebook.
I just used it to install Vista into a VPC so it boots and installs OK.
HTH.

Dave;
Return the laptop and purchase on with Windows XP.
Toshiba, Dell and probably others sell computers with Windows XP.

Exactly what is wrong?
You gave no details of your laptop so specifics are difficult.

It is probable your problems are typical of new computers sold with
Windows XP or Windows Vista.

Start by uninstalling any unnecessary programs.
Any other programs that you want but do not need running all the time,
disable them from starting at boot.
These two items will probably give the computer a significant boost
because of the removal of all the junk ware installed.

How much memory does the laptop have?
most need at least 1 GB RAM while some need 2 GB or more.

Yes, it is possible. Shrinking the partition works even with
Diskmanagement.

Why? Vista works well, learn to use it. There IS a bit of learning to
be done, post specific problems here and you'll probably get the
answers you need.

You have to buy a full version of XP and install it. Be aware, though that
on some computers (Dell for example) reverting that way will void your
warranty.

Tom;
Not quite true.
The warranty will not be void.
However it may be necessary to install the original operating system
at your own time and expense before warranty work can proceed.
