It tells me that the file is larger than the maximum supported by my
operating system.

I have tried a Win XP Pro on a 64 motherboard and a 32 bit P4 m/board
all with 1Gb Ram and plenty of HDD space eg 20Gb free.

The 32 bit version was download fine.

Are your hard drives FAT32 or NTFS? FAT32 cannot support file sizes larger
than 4GB.

How are you trying to install? What happens if you install by booting the
DVD? (You cannot install the x64 edition from an XP x86 desktop anyway).
You cannot upgrade from XP x86 to Vista x64 (like you can with Vista x86).

If your answer to Jane's question is that your present file system is FAT32
then you probably would get such a message.

What you should be doing is installing to an empty partition or drive (and
definitely not to your XP system drive) and booting with the dvd.
