Vista won't start up! Help!

Howdy!

Okay, I have a huge mega problem here. I'm not sure what happened between
the time I got off the computer and when I woke up this morning, but Vista is
forever stuck at the black loading screen with the green bar at the bottom.

My sister -who was on the computer after me- says that Windows downloaded an
Update thing and she went to bed shortly after restarting the computer. We
tried restarting it again and did Windows Restore. That didn't help either.

What should we do? I hope the computer isn't a total loss now, and I'm
really, really, really scared. We just got this HP computer shortly after
Vista was out and after our last computer crash (which conked XP, but then
again that computer was 5 years old) every little issue has my family
skittish. =(

Thanks!
