Vista won't see XP shares Problem

I can see all my shares on my Vista PC from the XP Pro PC. Also I can
open them and do whatever is necessary.

I can also "see" all my shares on my XP PC from Vista but can't open
any of them.

I have disabled the firewalls on both machines to no avail.

I have insured my permissions are correct. I have updated both
PC's with all the latest updates.

ARRRR.....Can somebody help?????

PS - I have spent the last 5 hours in google looking for solutions but
none of the sites have offered anything that works.

Don't know if it applies to your issue but it worked for me when I had a
similar problem months ago.

Cause
Network Map in Windows Vista diagrams the connections between network
devices to help you troubleshoot connectivity problems. Network Map uses a
discovery protocol called Link-Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) in order to
query the other devices on the network to determine how the network is
organized. Computers that are running Windows Vista include the software
components that implement the LLTD protocol. For network computers that are
running Windows XP to appear on the map, they must have a discovery protocol
enabled that can respond to the mapping computer's requests.

Solution on Windows XP
For computers running Windows XP to appear on the Network Map diagram, you
must download and install the LLTD Responder component. By installing the
LLTD Responder, and enabling File and Printer Sharing in Windows Firewall, a
computer running Windows XP can respond to other Windows Vista computers on
the network that are attempting to create a network map.

And make sure you have enabled File and Printer Sharing in Windows Firewall
stated in Solution on Windows XP.

thanks so much for your suggestion. I had disabled the Vista Firewall
all together however did allow those items mentioned in the article
you sent me. That did not help my problem. I hope this isn't another
Microsoft scheme to force everyone off of XP?
Grrr....Who know?

I'm normally not paranoid but If I put a little thought into this
problem, I'd feel compelled to believe that since Vista Ultimate
doesn't seem to have this problem, that I was "had".
If Microsoft was more clever they wouldn't offer lower end versions of
Vista.

Also, try to add "Everyone" to shared folder's permission and see if it
helps.

Well....Yes I had installed that patch and also had added permissions
to my username and Everyone as administrators just to see if it would
work and it didn't. I'm not sure why this is such a big mystery
because I would have thunk that Microsoft would be the one's to be
doing all this beta testing before releasing a major upgrade like
Vista.

I guess that just proves that all businesses are all about the
almighty dollar. These days that seems to be higher on the priority
list than quality and/or assurance.

Wonder what would happen if Microsoft took some lessons from Toyota?

Maybe we would have a product that not only LOOKED good but also
WORKED well.

I am floored by what a mess MS made of simple networking in Vista.
Surely those tards planned on basic networks of Vista and XP machines,
yet person after person talks about about spending hours to get simple
file sharing to work

The other thing that I can think of is to make sure both systems are in the
same workgroup? Other than that, I couldn't think of anything else, and it
did take me some time to solve the problem but I came to the similar
conclusion as you would likely to make.

I like Toyota, BTW

This is not gonna come as good news but i had the same problem and posted it
here a couple of weeks back and i also posted in a dozen other places.
I tried absolutely everything that was suggested and nothing worked until
yesterday.........
I did a completely clean reinstall of XP Pro and now it works fine just as
it should out of the the box !
I know its hassle but if i had done it in the first place it would have
saved me days of time.

PS I still think Vista as a far as the vast majority of users will be
concerned is nothing but style over substance

Well If were to do a reinstall, I just wonder when and which MS update
will break it again. Microsoft needs to solve this but they obviously
don't care.


Since I can see shares on the Vista machine from the XP machine
I'm going to call it good. BTW.....I had just reinstalled from
scratch, my XP OS only about 5 months ago. So I don't see why this
share issue should require another re-installation.

Microsoft should have their technicians looking into this problem for
us instead of the other way around.

Totally agreed. After I solved the initial networking problem, my thought
was - How am I going to have every XP machine that could be networked to
Vista machine to install the patch? What if I am on travel or at another
business location? Should be a 2 min work for networking XP and Vista.
