Network Vista to XP

E

Eddy

Not sure how to explain this but will try.

I have two pc's with xp networked to my vista pc, they both appear in the
network window and also my vista pc appears, if neither xp pc's are on
then nothing appears. I've just networked a XP netbook to my vista pc as
well and that won't appear unless one of the other XP pc's is on?

Now the funny thing is once it had appeared I made a shotcut for netbook and
even though nothing appears in the network window I can access it via the
shortcut.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Eddy

Check the network properties list in the WinXP systems for a component called
the Link-Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) Responder. If the LLTD Responder
component is not installed on the Windows XP-based computers they may not be
seen in Vista's Network Map.

Here's a link to an MS fix for the WinXP systems. Note, if they're up to SP3,
don't waste your time with the readily downloadable version (fix v5) probably
won't to anything but say that it's not needed, so then simply request the
hotfix patch (fix v6) and apply it to each WinXP-SP3 system.

You must request the hotfix from MS. The how-to-request it information is
contained within the KB article. It will be supplied to you as a zip file with a
time limited password. After you extract the hotfix patch, simply run it in
place.

Good luck!

Thanks for your help.

I'm not too bothered that it doesn't show on the network map but the problem
is just that the netbook wont show on the network until one of my other pc's
using xp connects.

Now I have a short cut to the netbook I can access it via that although it
doesn't appear on the network if its the only one connected.

All a bit strange.

Anyway thanks again.
