Vista won't load after latest update

Denis

The latest updates were installed automatically on my machine yesterday and
the computer worked fine all day after the install and reboot. When I shut
the machine down last night it took about 5 minutes to do so and this
morning Vista won't load. I get the POST information on the screen followed
by the progress bar of Vista with Microsoft Corporation above it. After
that the screen goes blank and that's it. The hard disk activity light
keeps flickring but nothing appears on the screen.

I have tried to boot the machine in safe mode and also to the last know good
configuration but with exactly the same result.

This is a dual boot machine and I am able to load XP without a problem. I
am using the XP installation to send this message so I guess that has
destroyed the system restore point in Vista.

Any idea what may be preventing Vista from loading and how to put that
right. I suspect the latest update may have something to do with this.
