I'm having a problem with Vista Home Premium. When I push the sleep button
on the keyboard or select sleep from the Start menu, the screen fades and
goes blank but the computer is still running and the hard drive is still
active. I used to be able to use System Restore but that stopped working
too. Please help!

Have you *ever* been able to invoke sleep, or has this been a problem ever
since you have had the computer? The reason I ask is that I traced my sleep
problem to an aborted and faulty installation of drivers for a non Vista
ready program. Sleep worked before that; I have corrected the problem now,
so my question to you is whether your sleep function ever worked.

Good question! Sleep worked in the beginning for a few months, and the problem probably did have to do with a faulty program. If you could help me further, I'd really appreciate it.

Skidude -- I suggest that you first concentrate on why your System Restore
has 'stopped working'. Perhaps a first thing to do on that is to check and
see whether your system has been making regular Restore points. On your
Start button, type System in the search box; then click on System Restore;
if you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the
password or provide confirmation by clicking Continue. In the System Restore
window that comes up, click on Next. This will give you a listing of all
the Restore Points for the last 5 days; if you want to look further back,
click the box for "Show restore points older than 5 days". My system has
Restore points about every day, and additional ones when there has been an
event like a Windows Update. The question at this point is whether you do
have one or more Restore points listed. If you do not, what *is* listed?
Then, when you try to Restore, what actually happens (like error messages)
which indicate to you that your System Restore has 'stopped working'? Reply
back and we will see what to do next.

For the sleep problem (which I had till I found this), go to your power
options for the plan you are using. Go into the advanced options for that
plan and under the section for - 'Multimedia settings' =>'When Sharing
Media'. Make sure your options for plugged and un-plugged say 'Allow the
computer to sleep. Then when you put your computer to sleep it won't just
black the screen and keep running like you described.
Good luck.

I noticed I had the same problem that just started today. I read some comments on other sites where they found the answer to their problem in the event log, under system. When I looked under sleep, it said that a USB root awakened the system.

Well it just so happened that I just bought a new wireless keyboard/mouse combo and installed it yesterday. It appears that the keyboard and mouse were still sending connection signals to the receiver which would make the machine awaken before it would completely go to sleep.

So I went into the device manager and disabled the mouse and the keyboard from awakening the system, and bingo, it went to sleep (originally I did just the mouse and not the keyboard). The only downside apparently is that you have to use the power button to wake it up. In case you dont know how, here's how:

1. Go to Control Panel
2. Click on System
3. Click on Device Manager on the left of the screen
4. Expand on “Mice and other pointing devices”
5. Double click on your device
6. Click the tab that says Power Management
7. Uncheck “Allow this device to wake the computer.”

Thanks for the tip! My new Vista laptop wouldn't go fully into Sleep mode
when plugged in when I closed the lid. The hard drive and fans would still
run. On battery only it would go into Sleep. Changing the Multimedia
Settings did the trick.

Will that setting make the Vista machine fall asleep by itself by the power
settings time-out while watching recorded TV content on an XBox 360 media
extender? Or will it stay awake until no active media sharing is running?
