Does your connection to that server cross over from one internet provider's
equipment to another's before it reaches the server? If so, such
connections
to port 25 are often blocked to cause troublr for spammers.

See here for Comcast's instructions:

They were written for Outlook Express, but should also work under
Windows Mail if you avoid the One Click Fix. Note the part at the
bottom about using a different port number.

When right clicking and then selecting "catch-up" it takes forever sometimes
to correctly catch-up all mail listed. Also, sometimes after doing so and
then shutting down and reopening, one of the subscribed accounts does not
have all the mail previously marked as "read" still so. In other words,
they are bolded .

Why?

This is quite different from Outlook Express.

I don't understand your mention of "mail" and "catch-up". As far as I
know, the catch-up feature is for use with newsgroup messages, not mail.
If you meant newsgroup messages, tell us how you are invoking the
catch-up function. If the messages headers were already downloaded,
the fastest way to do this is to use the Ctrl-A and Ctrl-Q commands.
Also, make sure the default option "Get 300 headers at a time" is not checked.

Yes, newsgroup messages

By right clicking on the newsgroup and selecting "catch-up". About one-half
of the time it pops up a dialog box that says "catching up with selected
newsgroup" and it has a thermometer bar that is about 90%
complete--sometimes it quickly fills from left to right and then stops at
90% complete or thereabouts. Shortly after, it indicates that Windows mail
is "not responding" and sometimes it takes 2-4 minutes before it finishes
and turns all bolded items to normal font, hence "catching up."

Then I can close Windows mail, and reopen and if I selected five separate
newsgroups to catch-up, one at a time in the previous process, at least one
of those will show bolded items that did not "register" as caught up even
though they had turned non-bold during previous process. It is like the
program is forgetting what it just caught up with.

Actually I often do this after "synchronizing all newsgroups" and I download
both headers and messages in that process.

The worst part is that when waiting for the program to respond, no actions
are possible for 2-4 minutes on that program. I can still work with other
programs.

The same instructions work got Windows Mail, but notice that you are NOT
done when Windows Mail says you are. You still have to change some
settings, so keep reading the instructions.

I'd be willing to bet that your error message is different.
For one thing, you seem to reside in the UK, where Comcast does
not operate!

Please copy your error message and post it here.

The catch-up process will be slow only when there are thousands of
messages on the server. Hopefully you would only have to do the initial
catch-up once. It is possible that you closed the program before it could
finish updating all the database pointers for the 'read' messages.

Why would you need to do catch-up for a newsgroup more than once?
If you have downloaded headers and/or messages that you do not
intend to read, use the Ctrl-A, Ctrl-Q commands.
