Vista Windows Mail --> Outlook Express, Pleeease???

P

Paul H

I've been stuck in Vista's Windows Mail Hell since I naively converted to it
when I got my 1st Vista laptop. After a couple months I wanted to return to
Outlook Express on my XP Pro laptop, because of unacceptable performance
issues. There was not a method to do that reverse migration.

Is there finally an automated way, now, for me to convert my windows mail
messages and folders back to OE? I have many thousands of messages in over
100 folders, nested 3 or 4 levels deep in places, which is why Windows Mail
takes a long time to start up, a long time to Create Mail, and a long time
to get to the "Select Recipients" screen.

TIA, Paul

Did you try the suggestions here?

Nope, and I personally can't see a lot of reason why anyone would produce
one.

You might be able to find a set of various mail clients that can import from
WM and then finally can be read by OE.

For example, if you install Outlook on your Vista system, you can Export the
Windows Mail Messages to Microsoft Exchange. Then, take the resulting file
to your XP system, install Outlook there (no need to run it even once, it
just has to be installed for the process to work), copy the PST file over,
and then in OE use File, Import, Messages, Outlook.

Note that this process will not work if Outlook isn't installed. You don't
have to use it, you can install it, do the import/export and remove it, but
it has to be there during the process.

Perhaps you might consider moving some of the older messages out of the way,
or moving to another mail client such as Windows Live Mail or Outlook.

How much memory and free space does your Vista system have? How fragmented
is it?

This was already answered in the OE NGs. Just to summarize, you can drag
the individual eml files back into OE folders and they will then be
incorporated into OE. Its very easy to do, but if you want it even easier,
you can use my OEX program (www.oehelp.com/OEX/) to import directories of
eml files into OE also.

www.oehelp.com/OEX/ works with both OE and WinMail and will import from
directories of eml file or dbx files into the relevant message stores.

Hi Steve,
Your product looks interesting. Your main page says "WORKS IN WINDOWS MAIL
IN VISTA! ". Does that mean no dbx files? Are accounts set up like in OE?
Rules? Junk mail domain IDs? Can they be imported from Windows Mail?

My ideal scenario would be to have a look-alike to OE, in Vista, that uses
dbx files, so it would be fast (instant), not the "beyond sluggish" that is
apparently caused by the techniques used by Windows Mail after it has
converted my messages, folders, and contacts. I am so sick and tired of
having to wait many seconds, sometimes a couple minutes, before I can
compose an email. And tired of bugs that OE does not have.

I'll go back to using my XP Pro laptop for my email activities, if I can.

Thanks,
Paul

The website describes the features of the program. It will import from dbx
files into WinMail and it will import from WinMail directories into OE. It
doesn't do anything with message rules. It only does what is described on
the website. It doesn't work in 64 bit OS's yet.
