If you are using the power button on the start menu, the default option is
sleep not shutdown. Use the arrow to the right of the button to display the
shutdown options. The default behavior of the power button on the start menu
can be changed using the advanced options in Control Panel>Power Options.

yes i use the arrow and my com still wont turn off with vista

I am having the same problem. Mine just started recently though. I found
another person with a thread here that had the same problem as well and it
was suggestion that he change how the power off icon is set up, I am not
sure that is the
option for me, I have everything set up like xp so I just press start>
shutdown> then use the drop down option for shut down..

It goes through all the steps of shutting down then just stops at the point
where the actual power to the MB should turn off, and my monitor does not go
into sleep mode.

I have checked the ACPI settings in bios but I have not been able to find
anything in vista like the old APM check box in XP.

Ok I think I at least know what part of the problem is. Its NVIDIA GPU
driver related... I used the remove programs option and removed the NVIDIA
drivers then started my computer in safe mode and used Drive Cleaner Pro and
then restarted the computer and shut down the computer several times with no
problems. I re loaded the current latest drivers and the problem came back.
I repeated the process above and tested again with no problems. I loaded the
current NVIDIA Beta drivers and the problem returned.
