Vista will not recognize router

I have an existing hardwired home network with 2 XP computers sharing
a DSL internet connection, printer, etc. I recently purchased an
additional computer that has Vista. When I tried to access this home
network, it does not seem to recognize the router. I have checked all
of the hardware and software connections that I know about, and no
success. I have run ipconfig on the main XP computer and the Vista
computer and found that the IP address for the two are different. The
XP looks good with 192.168.1.101 while the Vista is 169.254.136.129 I
also found the IP address of the router 192.168.1.1, I was able to
ping it with the XP computer, but the Vista computer gives an error
"transmit failed, error code 1231". The router is a LinkSys NR041
Cable/DSL 4-port Router.

I can't find the NR041 on the Linksys support site so I can't tell
you if there have been firmware releases for this.

However, two things to try are:

Hi,

Can you be a bit more specific as to how the computers and printer are
interconnected. Specifically, are the computers independently connected to
the router, and if so which port numbers are they connected to. I am assuming
that the ports have addresses 192.168.1.101-104. Check that the port
connected to your Vista machine is actually enabled in your router. If not,
then enable it through the router interface. You will have to do this from
your XP machine. Once you have ensured that the port is enabled, check to see
if Vista can connect to the Internet. If not, then you might need to set the
IP address manually in Vista - if connected to port #3, for example, then you
will need to set the IP address to 192.168.1.103.

Thank you for the help.
I decided to purchase a new router, and now everything works fine with
the home network. Of course there has to be a but...
But now I cannot get the router to access the internet. Working on
it, hopefully all is well.

typically you have to power cycle your broadband modem when you
connect a new router (OR you have to find the mac address of the old
router and manually enter it into a field in the new router - this
happens when your provider registers the mac address and pairs it
with the broadband modem). what router did you purchase?
