Vista v6 emails lagging or not responding

Can anyone please explain why my windows mail takes such a long time to load,
and has terrible lag
I can't highlight the messages to cut and paste, and sometimes I get the
message that it isn't responding
This doesn't happen all day
There are times when it is very fast
Please help

to what works and what doesn't.

My emails are responding better than ever
