Vista Upgrade

The Question is:

What is needed for a Vista Upgrade, vs a Vista Full Version?

Does it need to read an XP disk, or just tell that there is a previous
version of windows on the HD?

I know the subject is vague, but some history to get you to where I am.
First of all, my wifes computer died, and I bought her a new HP. No problem
there. I built myself a new system some from her old computer but 90% new.
I used her old SATA hard drive and the two that were in mine, other than
that... new system.

I do have a problem, both of the old computers hers and mine had Windows XP
on them. Mine a Dell from the factory, with a dell only Windows XP disk.
Her's was a home build with an original copy of XP.

When I got done assembing the system, I get an OS error and then some
tweeking, I get as far as the "Windows didn't shut down properly" I choose
safe boot and it hangs at MUP.sys.

Why don't I just use my original XP disk and re-format.. good question.. the
dog chewed up the disk. Don't laugh, its true, I can post a picture of it,
in about 5 pieces, good old German Shepards. So now I am stuck, no Windows
XP disk to use, and trying to decide if I should by the Full version or what
I really should only need.. the upgrade version.

Any help??

Thanks in advance.

You need an installed, activated, WGA-approved XP installation. If you
don't have one, there is a trick that will work based on installing
Vista twice, although this is obviously not supported.

(And note, it's not within the license agreement either, unless you have
a legal qualifying installation)

Hi Joe,

You should be OK to use the Upgrade version of Vista (although, if you
intend to install it on more than one machine, you will need a copy for each
machine - this is because of activation and validation issues which prevent
the same copy of Vista from being legally installed on more than one machine
at the same time). If you follow the instructions in my post 'Clean Install
Windows Vista Using Upgrade Media', also in this newsgroup (dated 9/21/2007),
you should be able to solve your problem.
