I know the update advisor will not work on an X64 machine. Any one know if
"they" plan on making one, or should I just "dive" in and hope I don't get
sucked out to sea by the undertow?

I don't know if they plan on making one, perhaps when 64-bit becomes more
mainstream. That however, doesn't mean you can't do the same or, at least
some of the due diligence 32-bit user can do. First, understand, the
upgrade advisor is not perfect so it's always advisable to check your
hardware and software whether doing an upgrade or as would be necessary in
your case as Carey pointed out, doing a clean install.
You need to check the manufacturer's of all your hardware both internal and
external to see if there are Vista compatible 64-bit drivers available. You
also need to check the websites of all your applications to see, first if
they can be installed and run on a 64-bit setup and whether or not there are
updates or 64-bit versions of your software available.
