Vista Ultimate Windows Error Recovery Loop

I have an Asus Lamborghini VX2S. Intel Core Duo, Nvidia 8800GTS, .

Yesterday, my computer has crashed due to a sleep mode error. It came
preinstalled with Vista Ultimate. I was not issued with an OEM disk but was
given the Asustek Recovery Disk.

All patches and software upgrades done.

It worked flawlessly when I first took it - except in one respect.

When it went to sleep, it wouldn't wake up. It stayed totally asleep,
despite waiting, or pressing the esc button etc.. The only way out of the
problem was switching it off and rebooting. Once I even had to take out the
power battery and wait awhile before rebooting it.

Anyways, Vista sleep errors seem to be very very common and so after reading
what other users did, I fixed the problem by not enabling the screensaver
and disabling the power management.

And it works perfectly again.

But over Christmas, I thought I'd enable the screensaver.

Yesterday at about midnight, after doing some internet surfing, (I went
out - came back) the computer went to sleep and wouldn't wake up. I pressed
the shut down button and later restarted the machine. This always worked
before.

Instead I get the black error page:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Windows Error Recovery
Windows failed to start. A hardware or software change might be the cause.
If Windows files have been damaged, Startup Repair can help diagnose and fix
the problem. (Use the arrow keys to highlight your choice.)
Launch Startup Repair (recommended)
Start Windows Normally
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Both options don't work and lead back to the same Windows Error Recovery
page.

I tried booting in safemode but have the same result.

My only option it now seems is to use the Asustek Recovery Disk- but that
will wipe out the C partition where I stored my recent Christmas photos and
emails which I am anxious to keep.

What else can I do?

Hello Andre,

Thanks for the prompt reply. No, it results in the same result. Back to the
Windows Error Recovery.

My only recommendation is to borrow a friends Windows Vista DVD and do a
repair installation with it.

Boot from your Windows Vista DVD, select the System Repair Option > on the
setup screen, select 'Repair Computer > Select your installation of Windows

Thanks Andre,

One of my friends was about to try Fedora Live or BARTPE to try and recover
the data. But I'll give this a go first.

Will let the forum know about the outcome.

As far as getting the machine working probably nothing. But to
rescue your files:

You can get a little gadget called something like an IDE/USB
adapter. It's exactly the same idea as those little usb hard drives
but external. They come in various configurations and finding one that
plugs into a 2.5" notebook drive isn't hard.

Remove your drive from the notebook and caddy (seldom difficult,
look in your owner's manual) and using the usb adapter plug it into another
machine. It will come up just like any other usb drive. Get your valuable
data off, then put it back and reinstall.

Here's the kind of thing I'm talking about. I'm not recommending
the vendor or anything just showing you what I mean:

Thanks Wharf. Will also give that a try too tomorrow.

Just worried that it may void the warranty on the Asus.

I borrowed a friend's install disk but its not an (off-the-shelf) Vista. Its
a Dell re-install disk.

(I did ask around but the only one of my friend who has a copy- a Vista
Corporate has it in his office which is closed)

When I used the Dell - it didn't go to a System Repair Option. It instead
entered into a Install page - which had three questions about language
version, keyboard.

Should i proceed? Or wait til Monday to get that Corporate disk?

(My version is a Vista Ultimate)

Sorry, shouldn't have bothered . I googled it on another computer and got

http://vistaultimate.windowsreinstall.com/repairstartup/repairstartup.htm

the answer I need.

but it seems my friend's version is a home edition not ultimate.

however it seems to be working thru the repair.... good news.

The first time it went back to the Windows Repair page

I tried again.

The second time it did repairs but the box said the repair might be needed
another (few) times.

The third time it booted from the (reinstall) CD, it went straight to the
Windows Startup page - and all was perfect again! What a relief.

Thanks Andre!!

One last question can I can a install CD from MS or Asus in case this
happens again and I can't get hold of my friends?

I don't think I'm so clear on this question, you can create a copy of the
Vista installation disk for emergency purposes.

Opps. Sorry for the typo. What I meant was - can i order an Vista Ultimate
installation DVD from Microsoft ?

But it seems you've addressed it - can I just create a copy of the Vista
installation disk by just burning it? No problems with software protection
devices?

And will any Vista Installation disk (Home etc..) will do? Or do I have to
get a Vista Ultimate?

Vista is setup differently, where all the editions of Vista are included in
all editions of Vista, whether its Home Basic, Home Premium, Business or
Ultimate, just that its the key thats distributed with the SKU that
determines which edition of Vista gets installed.
