Vista Ultimate Printer Problem

L

Larry Dodd

I upgraded my machine from XP Pro to Vista Ultimate and things in the
printing department are not going well. I see none of the printers that I
had installed previously on my machine so I try to Add Printer and I get the
error message "Windows can't open Add Printer Operation could not be
completed (Error 0x000006be)" I am not sure what is causing this problem but
when it does this the Print Spooler service stops and I have to restart the
service. I can't get any printers to install on this machine because I can't
ever get in the Add Printer wizard. Please help!!

Exact same problem here, down to the error code. Local printers don't
install either.

It sounds like the previous driver is causing the spooler service to
terminate.

Bruce has some value pointers.

In my case the 0x000006be error is on a clean install of Vista
Enterprise, so previous drivers don't pertain. I checked server
properties and there are none. The error happens whether adding local
or remote printers, and also when viewing the Ports tab in the server
properties....I believe it may be related to printer ports.

what key entries are in the registry

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Print
and
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print

Look for installed printer, drivers, and port monitors

There is nothing under either of these registry keys. I followed all the
directions in Bruce's article as well. When the error comes up it is always
a different error number. How can I reinstall the spooler service drivers? I
also did an upgrade of Vista on top of itself in the hopes that the
applications would repair themselves but that had no effect either. What
else can I try to get this thing working?

Has anyone found out anything about this problem. I have obtained the
spoolsv.exe from another machine to try and replace the current one on my
machine but it says i need to have permissions to do this. I have logged on
as the administrator and everything else that I can think of but still
nothing. Anyone who can help would be appreciated.

Has anyone found an answer to this problem. I do not want to start from
scratch if at all possible.

Alan, as you're in the Windows Printing Team here is a related problem/issue.

In my case I have a HP 3015 all-in-one printer on a W2003 Server. I can see
the networked printers from Vista (64-bit Enterprise version) but can't
install them. I did search the KB for "install printer drivers" in the Vista
Enterprise KB and read about Kernel vs. User mode drivers. I can accept this.

HP says the driver is "in" Vista, and if I plug the printert into the Vista
nmachine it detects the printer and installs it! Great! But I can not
manually install the driver from Vista and use it with the exact same printer
on the network! It is on the DVD somewhere but there is no way, given how
the DVD is set up, to get at it! I have the drivers installed in Vista from
when I connected the printer directly, but can't tell Vista to use them to
work with the printer on the network! Talk about frustrating! There IS a
driver that supports the printer, but apparently it can't be gotten at!

Suggestions?

HP changed a bunch of the driver names in Vista. When the driver name is
different, it's a different driver. When Vista connects to the server it
will attempt to use the driver from the server.

Here's what you do, since this has been the work around since NT4 times.
You need to add a local printer that prints to a local port with the name
\\printserver\printshare
Bruce has the step by step guide on this.
