I have a IBM thinkpad t43 with a 2gb of memory 100gb 7200rpm drive, i
believe the processor is 2.0gb pentium m, and the video is 64mb ati
dedicated.

Starting this thing up the hard drive (after signing in) grindes away for at
least 3-4 minutes, and then later on with the computer just sitting there
the hard drive will go at it again. I disabled windows defender, and turned
off a number of unused services.

any ideas here?

thanks,
ed

This is a wild guess. Check to see if there are any BIOS updates available.

This sounds like the Vista indexing feature. This will go on for awhile but
it should reduce in time as it completes the indexing process over time.

Is the hard drive activity having a negative effect on performance? If not,
I wouldn't worry about it.

There are many modules in Vista that could be working like SuperFetch,
Indexing, Shadow Copy and etc.

ive turned off index.
yes it is affecting performance, its shooting up to 100% in performance
monitor.

what does superfect and shadow copy do? im not connected to a domain network

also is there a way to get the XP style logon box (where you have
user/password on the two lines)
