Vista SP1 Will Not Install

M

Mr Taf

I've tried numerous times to Install Vista Sp1, but without success. The
install appers to go well, reaching 100% at stage 3, but then the screen
reports the SP did not successfully install, and proceeds to roll back. On
Checking the message in Windows Update, the install failed with error
80004005.

I've raised the issue directly with MS, but the advice to install the SP in
Safe mode has not helped. I've also trawled various forums and cannot find
any reference to the specific error code.

I own a Sony Vaio VGN-FZ1. A number of forums seem to suggest it might be a
hardware issue, and I have tried disabling / uninstalling various devices to
see if this helps, but this also has not got me any further.

Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone know what this error code
means? Is there a way to force the SP to install despite this error code (it
does get to 100% at stage 3 after all, so maybe it does install, but one of
the packages check routines is picking up an error which doesn't really
exist???)

Hello,

Open in notepad, the cbs.log file, search for the error code: 80004005
post 10 lines prior and 10 lines after the error code.

CBS.log is located at c:\windows\logs\cbs\cbs.log

Thanks,
Darrell Gorter[MSFT]

I had the same problem
and after a lot of trial and error, got SP1 to install by opting to install
in the quiet mode /q

Does not make sense but for me , it worked

Thanks for response Carey. I've tried the standalone version as well as the
one via automatic update and get the same error in both cases..

It won't hurt anything to try...
please post back with results.

I suspect it was just some odd fluke

M

Mr Taf

Sounds like it was a fluke. It has failed with the same error. The errors
in CBS.LOG (in Darrells answer) all point around an issue with Windows
Firewall, so I've even tried turning the firewall off, but this also has not
helped.

So no luck yet, but thanks for the post, it was definitely worth a go.

Hello,
Can you check if there is a bootstat.dat file present on the system?
Look for one at \boot\bootstat.dat
and look for one at \windows\bootstat.dat

I have an identical issue, exact errors etc...
Both:

\boot\bootstat.dat
and
\windows\bootstat.dat

exist on my system.

As an aside, I have Avast antivir installed - what AV is OP using?

Let me guess. You have McAfee security software or some other Antivirus/Malware software? It's a known issue with McAfee ISS and SP1 Update. Had the exact same problem. Turn OFF "until restart" everything in McAfee, etc. that you can find. Try the update again. If that doesn't work (if you have something other than McAfee), then I suggest a uninstall of the program, then update and then re-install. If you are running Norton, it does NOT play well with Vista to begin with and you should change to another virus program.

Does anyone know what this error code
means? Is there a way to force the SP to install despite this error code (it
does get to 100% at stage 3 after all, so maybe it does install, but one of
the packages check routines is picking up an error which doesn't really
exist???)

I am also having same symtoms, 100% of Stage 3 complete, then rollback with
error 8004402F which seems to be related to SMS which I am not running based
on only 2 matches I have found in searches.

I only have C:\Windows\bootstat.dat. - Should I delete it?

I am also about to try the SP in Safe mode and will post results.

Thanks
Jay

Cure: turn OFF your virus ware or uninstall it while you update and then put it back. Which Virus/Security program are you running? Had exact same problem with SP1 and McAfee. Simple turn off, fixed it all.

I uninstalled AV - Still failed in dangerous mode. So I tried safe mode -
Still failed.

I'll try again when I feel so inclined I guess.

Hello,
Do not delete the bootstat.dat file, you will get error message that this
thread is talking about.
your error code is different so it's a different issue, not that same as
what is on this thread.
I have only seen your error code when the tmp or temp folder environment
variables are not correct.

Thanks,
Darrell Gorter[MSFT]

Bootstat.dat does exist in Windows, but not under Windows\boot.

However, following up onone of the other replies, I uninstalled IOLO
anitvirus, and re-tried. SP1 successfully installed after this.

It does seem to be a common theme that antivirus packages are interfering
with SP1 installation. Maybe Microsoft need to take note of this and either
change the AP install routine, or else warn users about this as part of the
install so stop us going off down numerous dead-ends.

However, many thanks for your assistance with this. I have at last got the
result I was looking for.

Good guess. IOLO antivirus was installed. I say 'was' because as soon as i
uninstalled it, SP1 successfully installed.

Many thanks for your response on this. It's a shame Microsoft Support
themselves could not offer this advice and I have had to rely on the good
grace of the user community to answer my response.

Many thanks again

Hello,
The generic trouble-shooting article for SP1 installations does suggest to
disable anti-virus as part of the trouble-shooting.
947366 Error message when you try to install Windows Vista Service Pack 1:
"Installation was not successful" or "An internal error occurred while
installing the service pack"
