Vista SP1 removed the Search shortcut from the Start Panel

I sent the foolowing message to Microsoft -
Message: Microsoft removed the Search button from the Start panel for Vista
in SP1. This is a great disservice for your users. You may believe the
alternate approaches are sufficient, but you are SO VERY WRONG when it comes
to the average user. I do not care what your reasons or excuse are, you are
still WRONG and it was a thoughtless mistake.You should correct this change
immediately with a "fix" or whatever is necessary if you really want to be of
service to your users.

You do not need to know the reply because it completely missed the point of
the message.

QUESTION: Does anyone know how I might be able to restore the Search
function to the Staart Panel? I understand there is a way but I do not know
it. I also have been told that there is a piece of software that will do the
job.

hit F3, it wont restore in start but its easy to use

Calm down. They HAD to remove it so that there is a level playing field for
other search software providers.

Actually, Microsoft did NOT "remove it". They simply EXPANDED its
usablity, and disabled it by default. It's easy-enough to put it
back.

Do this:
1) Right-click on the Windows Orb (the Start Button).
2) Choose "Properties" from the popup menu.
3) Click on the "Start Menu" tab
4) Make sure the Radio-button next to "Start Menu" is activated.
5) Click on the "Customize" button next to it.
6) Go down the list and put a check-mark beside each option which
mentions "Search".
7) Click on "Ok".

If you want the "Run" command restored to the Start Menu, also put a
checkmark beside it the same way.

By the way, the "piece of software that will do the job" is called
"Microsoft Windows Vista."

The same may be done the same way if you prefer to use the Classic
Start Menu. Just make sure the Radio-button next to "Classic Start
Menu" is activated, rather than the one beside "Start Menu".

The only change Microsoft made with the Search command in Vista was to
expand the command's usability.

It is the same with XP, by the way.
An out-of-the-box installation of XP will ALSO have the Search command
hidden, until the Start Menu is configured by the user.

So, the only thing which has changed since XP is the Start command's
expanded usablilty.

Now, don't you feel foolish for accusing Microsoft of doing something
they didn't?

I don't really believe this is true, Steve. I don't believe Microsoft
has been "required" to do this by any judicial body anywhere. Maybe
in the EU. But not in the U.S.

And, actually, they didn't "remove it". They did the SAME thing with
it they did in XP: They hid it from view until the Start Menu is
configured by the user.

Yes, friend: XP ALSO hides it from view in an out-of-the-box install,
until the user configures the Start menu.

ONLY ONE THING has CHANGED about the Search command in Vista: The
command has been EXPANDED.

SUPERFIX: Take ownership of "explorer.exe" in the windows folder
of vista with sp1 and rename to "explorerx.exe". Copy an original version of
"explorer.exe" from a non-sp1 installation to your sp1 windows folder where
you renamed "explorer.exe" to "explorerx.exe" to restore the search button
and keep all buttons on the start menu.

Hi Donald !

If you don't like my idea please don't use it ! I only posted it for people
who missed the search link and did not want to lose other buttons. I took the
time to share my knowledge of computers to benefit others. This procedure is
easy and requires no registry modification. It does not reduce the
preformance of the os in any way since explorer.exe scripts and internal
commands will be the same thus having no undesired affects. The only
difference between the old and new explorer file is the search link and this
is due to Google's anti-trust suit against Microsoft. This simple and easy
fix is completely safe and I never post an idea unless I have thoroughly
tested it my self. Try this to retain the full functionality of you Vista
W/SP1. You will be amazed at the result !
