Do you know if you have a discrete sound card or are you using the sound
that came on your motherboard?
A starting place for information on your computer's sound system is Device
Manager:

Start->Right-Click on Computer in the menu, then select Properties.
Click on Device Manager (list upper left of dialog), then follow the prompts
to allow it to display.
From the list, click the + sign nest to "Sound, Video and Game Controllers"
and tell us what it says.

For more detailed information, download and run Belarc Advisor:

Go to Start and type msinfo in the Search Box. In the results, click on
System Information.

In the system information window, expand the Components section and click
on Sound Device. This will show the name of the sound card and the
manufacturer.

Search for that manufacturers website on the internet and get the latest
Vista compatible drivers.

I think that it's the one that came with the mother board but can't be sure
as we bought it from someone else. In device manager it says that the
manufacturer of the high definition audio device (is this the same thing_i
totally have no clue) is microsoft. On belarc it comes up with no info at
all for it but does tell me that the main circuit board is by ASUSTek if
that's of any help?

There's more there than just AsusTek. Please copy all information under the
Main Circuit Board heading and paste it into your reply to this. What does
it say under the Multimedia heading? Copy and paste that as well.

From the motherboard model and/or the multimedia information, we should be
able to determine what chipset your sound device is using and if there is a
Vista driver available.

BTW, how old is the PC and who made it?

The computer is a year old i'm not sure who made it but i'm on the trail.
They guy who got it for us got his supplier to custom build it. Sorry, i
know this probably doesn't help at all. Here's the info you asked for:

Actually, the motherboard model P5VDC-X by Asus, allowed me to find support
information and downloads available on the Asus web site, www.asus.com. Look
there under support and put in the model where applicable.

It turns out that they have drivers for Vista for your motherboard,
including sound chip drivers, available here:

http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us

The file you need to get is described as ADI AD1986A Audio Driver
v6.10.01.6070

I now have sound! Thank you thank you thank you so much for all your help.
