vista slow to save

Can't find the answer to this - probably because I don't know which key
words to use.
I have 2-3 apps that save files in 2-10 seconds just as all other apps
do. But on occasion (about 50-70% of the time) these 2-3 apps take
15-20 MINUTES to save a file. If I try to kill these apps before the
save is finished, I lose all my work.
What could be causing this and what, if anything, can I do to resolve this?

Without knowing the names/versions of the applications, where they are
trying to save files, or the answer to The First Question of
Troubleshooting, I can't guess. Please provide the missing details.

The First Question Of Troubleshooting: what changed between the time things
worked and the time they didn't?
