Vista Search Results Blank

Using the search in Vista, I am getting a list of "blank page" icons with no
file information. This comes up by defoult in the "all" view. If I switch to
specific categorie views like "email", I will have correct results. I have
not been able to solve this, and can't find a cause. Please help!

Thanks for the tutorial - but none of these steps is a fix. The blank results
still fill the page.

Thanks again. I tried creating an entirely new indexing location and the same
"blank" results are on every search. The most frustrating part of this is
that it worked fine up until about 1 month ago. I may have to try a restore
and risk losing so many other things. how painful.

Note: Deleting the indexed data location {C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Search}is
not a good idea as it will most likely prevent indexing from working ever
again if you want to re-enable it. The right way to completely reset the
index is to go to the Indexing Control Panel -> Advanced -> and select
"Restore Defaults".

Also I wouldn't recommend resetting the the "Index this file for faster
searches" setting on every file. If you want to change which folders are
indexed, use the Indexing Control Panel. If you want to disable indexing
completely, use the Services Control Panel.

Having said all that, I'm afraid I don't have a great explanation why you
are seeing only blank icons in search results. I'll ask around ...

We have had a number of cases where users delete the Search directory and
then can't get search working later {without copying a bunch of files from a
working machine}. There are various system files in that directory that
don't automatically get recreated. We are looking into changing this
behavior in future versions to make it more robust but for now I would no
recommend doing this. The "Restore Defaults" button is the sledgehammer in
this case ...

Hi Dave,

When you have Indexing disabled, it will be ok to delete the data
location. When you re-enable it, it will automatically rebuild itself.
It is a more thorough and drastic way of doing it, but it usually helps
when there is a major corruption problem. I tested it on my system and
it rebuilds everytime. Your suggestion is the safest way of doing it
though. Sometimes you just need to bring out the sledgehammer. (haha)
