Is there a reputable free screen print utility that works with Vista? It
doesn't need to be real sophisticated like snag-it (which I use). I need
something that my PC unsophisticated friend can use to document error
messages and various problems she has so I can see what the problem looked
like. The Vista solution of copying the screen image to the clipboard is
totaly unacceptable.

You can capture the screen, specific windows, or an area of the screen with
the Snipping Tool (included in Windows Vista).

You have a print screen key on you computer. it at top left of your key
board. It places a screen shot on the clipboard and you can paste in word or
in any other similar application. It is then a picture that can be changed
by the picture tool bar tools.

If you would tell us why the standard Windows (all versions, not just
Vista) technique of pressing PrtScrn followed by Paste is "totaly
unacceptable," it might be easier to make a helpful recommendation.

Using Rob J's suggestion of the free Gadwin PrintScreen 4.2 from
www.gadwin.com, and changing its storage file format to PNG results in small
file sizes with little or no loss in resolution for typical data screens. I
haven't tried it with a rainbow of colors.

I didn't explain because it just seemed like too much information that
wasn't germain. But since you asked... This machine belongs to a very
novice user and that process is just too complicated. I even tried to
demonstrate it to her. We took a screen print of the desktop and pasted it
into paint. When we tried to print instead of getting a single sheet of
paper with the screen image, we got 2 or 3 pages of a greatly enlarged image
of about 1/2 the screen. She does not have word and I am trying to keep
this simple for her and introduce complexity at her pace.

I was unaware of the snipper till I got the response on this group. I had a
chance to see it today (I don't have Vista myself - I am helping a friend
with her Vista system) You are right it is a nice little tool. It would
certainly be adequate for me. It seems not to have a direct output to a
printer though, so we tried the Gadwin tool. It is just what the doctor
ordered!! Simple (press print screen and wait for the paper to come out of
the printer)and free. Thanks to all who helped me with this issue.
