Vista RTM Upgrade failed

I got an installation failure and rollback with no explanation, just "one or
more system components could not be configured", etc.

Only thing I could find was this in
C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther\setuperr.log

I cannot decipher it. Generic Command
({81a34a10-4256-436a-89d6-794b97ca407c}) is not exactly a meaningful
installation step.

Not a bad burn, it does all the file copying and stuff and getting almost
all the way through, through all the checklist items, and it fails at
"Completing Install" after some four or so hours of installation.

Darrell Gorter[MSFT]

Hello Jon,
Can you compress the setupact.log file into a zip file and send it to me?
There isn't anything in the portion of the log that indicates which
component is causing the failure.
CBS is component based setup
CMI is component management interface.
Based on what I see, one of the components called an advanced installer,
which is now trying to run from the pending install queue.
What isn't easily seen in in this portion of the log is what component
placed that call there.
Remove the online to send the zipped log file to me.
Thanks,
Darrell Gorter[MSFT]

Jon Davis

Sending you this, I was motivated to look again at this file. Seems it was
the IIS metabase upgrade process that failed. I uninstalled IIS, then
re-attempted the upgrade process... next morning, Vista was running, asking
me how I wanted to handle Automatic Updates... :)

Hello Jon,
Can you compress the setupact.log file into a zip file and send it to me?
There isn't anything in the portion of the log that indicates which
component is causing the failure.
CBS is component based setup
CMI is component management interface.
Based on what I see, one of the components called an advanced installer,
which is now trying to run from the pending install queue.
What isn't easily seen in in this portion of the log is what component
placed that call there.
Remove the online to send the zipped log file to me.
Thanks,
Darrell Gorter[MSFT]
