Vista Recycle Bin issue: multiple select not working - Bug or Feat

Hello to the Good Folks here,

I've been searching and lurking in these forums looking for an explanation
about this, but it seems this hasn't been discussed yet, so here goes:

I don't know when this started or if it's been that way from the start, but
I only noticed it recently. Vista Ultimate 32-bit (up to date with MS
updates) -> Recycle Bin -> multiple selection of files in Recycle Bin is not
working.

Tried Ctrl-(mouse)left click, Ctrl+A, Selection Rectangle, and Check Box for
the Selection of Elements. None of them work.

Tried Regedit -> delete HKCU\Software\Classes\Local
Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags folder -> logoff then logon to
get a fresh set of folder settings. But Recycle Bin issue still remains.

Deleted c:\$Recycle.Bin folder to regenerate fresh $Recycle.Bin folder.
Issue still remains.

This issue seems restricted to the Recycle Bin and also the Network folder.
Tried another friend's Vista computer's Recycle Bin - multiple select works
fine there. It seems something in my computer is affecting this issue, but I
don't know any of my programs would have that effect on the Recycle Bin, and
my computer is constantly protected from virus, spamware, and malware.

I would appreciate any possible explanation on this matter. Thanks in
advance and have a good day.

Sounds like you've got the single-select bug...

<canned>

I've written a script that helps MOST people with the multi-select problem.
It will remove single-select from saved folder views & saved defaults.
Right-click the link below & select 'Save Target As..."

http://mysite.verizon.net/res18hr7/FixSingleSelect.zip

Then extract the contents of the .zip file & run the script.

All explorer windows should be closed when running the script & you should
logoff & log back on after running it.

Hello Mr. Miller,

Thank you very much. Your script has solved my problem.

So it is a bug, after all.
If you don't mind, would you also know how that bug got activated,
if it affects any Vista computer, and if there's a way to avoid it in the
future?

Thanks again,
Stan

You're welcome.

No idea as to how it happens. The flag that controls this behavior exists
for the sake of dialogs such as 'Open File', where the selection needs to be
limited to a single item. But how it crosses over into saved folder views
is a mystery at this point.
