I have a legit copy of Vista RC2 from MS...can this ver.[RC2] be updated to
RTM [Business ver.]?

Yes, however I would not recommend upgrading from a pre-release version to
the final version. A clean installation usually yields better results and a
more stable operating system.

Keep in mind that even an upgrade installation of Vista is a clean
installation of the OS. This was not true in older versions of Windows but
it is beginning with Vista. You may well prefer to not to use the upgrade
option but it now gives you exactly the same result as wiping the drive and
reinstalling the OS from scratch.

Yes there is. There is not an upgrade path from x86 to x64, but upgrade
from x86 Ultimate RC2 to x86 Ultimate Gold should work.

Richard G. Harper said:
Probably not. There is no known upgrade path from RC2 to RTM.

Not if your RC2 is Vista Ultimate. You cannot downgrade from Ultimate to
Business. If your RC2 is Vista Business then you can.

The big question is whether Microsoft officially supports this upgrade.
Does Microsoft have this published anywhere?

It looks like it the OP wants to do an Ultimate to Business upgrade and that
is not possible.

Can't we just stick in the Vista RC2 install DVD when the Vista
Upgrade installer says it can't find a previous version? We were
able to install XP Upgrade clean that way...

Will it be the same with Vista?

It looks like it the OP wants to do an Ultimate to Business upgrade and that
is not possible.

Wouldn't that be more of a "downgrade"? I've never succeeded in doing
a downgrade of any Microsoft OS (or any OS, for that matter).

Why one would want to do it, I don't know...other than to save one's
user files and settings, and a little (or a lot) of money on an OS.

I never tried the Vista Files and Settings Transfer Wizard, since my
user files are more extensive than the size of a Dual-layer DVD, so I
just manually back up my files to an external drive.

Is there by chance a way to backup one's user files from his HD to an
external drive from within the Vista installer?

You would think so but it appears not. Some posts on here are saying that
the Upgrade edition is not bootable. I find this hard to believe and very
disturbing but it may be true.

Sorry Colin. What I really meant to ask is if with the new method of
upgrading, is Microsoft going to support an upgrade from a pre-release
version to an RTM version, or will the only upgrades supported be from prior
production versions (XP ) to Vista RTM

From all I have heard, RC1 to Final and RC2 to Final are supported. When I
installed 6000 x64 I did not do that so I haven't tried it. If you have
Virtual PC 2007 beta, try it there first.

Of course this all presupposes you are using a full edition dvd when you
upgrade. There is no way to test an Upgrade Edition yet.
