Hello,
I am trying to install Vista RC2 inside VirtualPC but it will not
start.
I am using file:
vista_5744.16384.061003-1945_x86fre_client-lrmcfre_en_dvd.iso
I have downloaded it from MS website last fall.
Is that iso bootable or not?
Jack

That is because you will need to convert the ISO to a bootable disk with something like Nero

Does it mean I am the condemned person? Damn!
I thought I can use RC2 until the end of May (or is it June) until licence
will expire!
Isn't so?
Jack

If you burn it as an .iso, it is.
There was nothing in my RC1 release that would indicate anything but the
time limit of June 1, 2007

How are you trying to boot from the ISO? Once you create the virtual
machine, press Start, and on the top menu, click on CD\Capture ISO image.
(Once you set this, you MIGHT have to reboot it.)

An *.iso file is not bootable. It's an image of the disk. You use a
burning program to burn it as an image to DVD to create a bootable DVD.

Uh, not true? If the ISO is of a bootable CD, then yes, you can mount it in
a VMWare session and boot from it. I just did it last week with the Ubuntu
iso.

Ok, I didn't think that was the case. Does it depend on how the *.iso was
created since the OP said he couldn't do it with the RC2 .iso? Thanks for
the correction.

Then maybe you have a bad ISO - have you tried burning it to a DVD and tried
booting off of it?

iso is fine.
Using Daemon Tools I was able to install Vista on my portable harddrive.
The problem I have is strictly connected to Virtual PC.

Rock,

To tell you the truth, I'm not an expert on this. All I now is that if the
ISO is bootable, you can use it to boot into either VMWare or VPC VM's. When
I build my own WinPE iso's, I use the oscdimg utility and that has a switch
that can make the ISO bootable. Then, when one creates CD's from the ISO
file, those CD's are bootable. I can't think of any other use for bootable
ISO's other than with VM's.

Thanks,

Lang

Thanks for the additional info, Lang.

It happens that Jack formulated :

What version of Virtual PC are you running - earlier version could not mount a
DVD size ISO - get the latest version and I bet it will work.
