It will find a use for all the RAM you have in your system, up to 4 gig for
32 bit Vista.

Make that 3 gig. The memory mapped io requires about a gig,
and if you install 4 gig you will only see about 3.2 gig available.
The motherboard manufactuer and prehipial manufactures use
up the 1 gig of memory mapped io and there is nothing Vista
can do about it. In the past this wasn't issue, since no one could
afford 4 gigs. That is also why 64 bit systems are becomming
more popular.

The extra RAM is still utilized, by the hardware. It is just not available
to the operating system. Max for the operating system seems to be about 3.2
gig. Some computers will present about 2.7 gig to the operating system.

Richard, this isn't correct. The hardware uses the address space, but
not the RAM itself. RAM above 3.1 or 3.2GB on a 32-bit machine is
wasted.

4 gig on our machines. But does it still only use the 3.2 gig in an XP 32

Yes. *All* 32-bit versions of Windows. And it's approximately 3.2 GB.
The actual number depends on what hardware you have.

Windows Vista may automatically set the /3GB flag allowing an application to
use 3GB, but unless the application is specifically written to use LAA, it
will be limited to 2GB of RAM.
The kernel uses 1GB in a 4 GB system.
This applied to WinXP Pro also, but the user had to manually set the /3GB
flag.
